Playgroups

July 31

What are playgroups and why are they good for you and your kids? Well, although there are many different kinds of playgroups (from the formal which includes themes and scheduled activities to the information that just gathers together), they are all basically the same thing: a group of children and their parents who get together on a regular basis. That’s it. It doesn’t have to be anything fancier than that, just an agreement between a group that you’re all going to get together regularly so your kids can enjoy playtime together.

Physical Education Ideas

July 31

It’s no secret that kids these days aren’t getting as much exercise as they could. After all, a few decades ago kids had to get up and get out in order to be entertained (since books and the few TV shows available could only go so far). But today, our kids are more likely to sit around for entertainment via the television, video games, computers, and other indoor activities. This, of course, translates into a whole lot of unhealthy kids who simply aren’t moving as much as they ought to be. Which means that it’s important for parents to start actively thinking about how to incorporate physical education into the every day lives of their children.Moving and Learning Series: Preschoolers & Kindergartners

Why Music Is Important In Preschool

July 29

Would you believe that your preschooler inherently knows what is good for her? Maybe that’s not always true (after all, she’ll grab the tater tots over the spinach every single time) but in the case of loving music, she’s automatically right. Although it may be to varying degrees, almost all preschool children love music. Some naturally start to dance when they hear it. Others enjoy clapping along in a group with sing-song games. And many enjoy singing to themselves or with others. This love for music is natural, and it’s something that’s great for your child.

Family Time - 5 Ideas for Making Time for Family

July 27
We all lead busy lives. Even those of us who try to simplify often have more multi-tasking going on than we would like to admit. We’re always only half-listening to the stories that our kids tell us while we’re simultaneously checking email, scheduling appointments, planning our next kids’ party or taking care of daily chores. Often, we barely see our spouse in passing as we hand off the kids to get a little adult alone time – even if it’s just a quick bath. It often feels like a necessary situation to getting everything taken care of that needs to be done on any given day.

But what really matters more; that the laundry all got done and folded or that you got to spend some time with the people that you love? Making time for your family is not only possible, it’s necessary. And it doesn’t take another twenty four hours in the day to manage it. It just takes a little bit of organization, a willingness to let a few things go sometimes in order to be with your family and the will to make it work.

Here are some ideas for making time for your family which you might find helpful if you’re starting to feel like you never really hear your kids and never really see your spouse:

Decorating Ideas For Kids Rooms

July 22

“Jellybean Tree” Wall Art

Your child’s room should be a safe place where she can go to enjoy her playtime, take her naps and get securely tucked in at night. For this reason, it’s important that you help your child inject a little bit of her personality into the room by decorating it in a manner that reflects who she is. At the same time, you want to make sure that the room is decorated in a way that visually appeals to you, is efficient for getting the day’s activities done and makes the maximum use of space with the least amount of clutter.

Here are a few decorating ideas that can get you started on the way to creating a safe, fun, aesthetically pleasing room for your kids:

What is the Smallest Number - Zero or One?

July 21

I was reading a post today on Bongo Mirror’s Reflections and Bongo Mirror was discussing the fact that a couple years ago she was reading a book that stated that Preschoolers would defend the fact that 1 (one) is the smallest number. I found that hard to believe… after all I was sure that my Preschooler, who would be starting Kindergarten in the fall, knew that Zero (0) was the smallest number. So, I asked my daughter, “Hannah, I have a question for you… What is the smallest number?” To my surprise she answered, “One.” I was truly surprised. After all, I have discussed the number zero with Hannah many times since she was two while teaching her Preschool at Home. So, I said to Hannah, “One? What about Zero?” She then said, “Oh yeah!!” She got it. But, I was very surprised that Zero wasn’t her first answer. She didn’t defend that one is the smallest number, however it wasn’t her first choice.

So, I’m left to wonder if the book that Bongo Mirror was referring to is correct. Is it true that Preschoolers will usually defend that one is the smallest number? I thought I would take a poll with my viewers:

Ask your Preschooler what number is the smallest number…. what was your child’s answer? Let me know by commenting to this post.
