Preschool Kids & Fitness

June 17

There was a time when parents didn’t worry about their preschoolers getting enough exercise. After all, kids that age are a bundle of energy that don’t ever seem to stop being in motion so they naturally get all of the exercise that they need, right? Wrong. It was probably always true that kids needed more exercise they were naturally getting but it’s even truer today, when technology has created more sedentary activities for children as young as toddler age.

Father’s Day History

June 15

With Father’s Day just around the corner I got to thinking of how Father’s Day got started. Since I’m a Mother my first thought is to say that Father’s Day probably started because Men couldn’t swallow the fact that there was a Holiday out there that had NOTHING to do with them. So, of course, these men (or fathers) had to begin their own Holiday. But, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Today I was doing some reading on the Internet and discovered that not only was Father’s Day not started by selfish men, but it wasn’t even started by a man at all!! It was started by a Woman. Here is a little Father’s Day History:

Preschool Children and Television: The Rules

June 14

Unless you are part of a very small percentage of the population, you have a television in your home. More likely than not, you have more than one television in your home or at least one TV and a laptop or other computer that can function as a television. And if you have a television and you also have children, you probably also have some television rules in your home. But are they the right rules? How can you know?

Let’s take a look at some common household rules for children regarding television use so that you can get a better grasp on where you fall on the spectrum of parenting regulations about television use in your home.

Defining a Good Mom

June 12

Check out this excellent post about what makes for a “Good Mom”. I had to share it with my viewers.

A good mom talks to her child. Hearing words and conversations is one of the biggest ways to impact a child’s ability to learn. The more words they hear when they are infants, the more words they will come to understand when they are toddlers and pre-schoolers…

Building Self Confidence in your Child

June 12

Children who truly believe that they can do anything they set their minds to are the children who grow up to succeed at all levels of life. It’s that belief in one’s self that lets them take appropriate risks, deal with challenges and learn to navigate the ins and outs of life. And there is no person in the world who can build that self confidence (or destroy it) like you can. If you want to have a child who does well in life (and what parent doesn’t right?), then you need to watch your own behavior and interaction with your child, making sure to maximize his or her self-confidence in every way that you can.

Teaching Letter Recognition To Your Child

June 10

When your child is able to look at a written letter on a page or hear the sound that a letter makes when spoken out loud and then identify what that letter is, he has mastered letter recognition. This is the cornerstone of being able to read and write and so is obviously an important skill which you should teach your child at a young age. But how do you go about teaching letter recognition to your child?

Social Skills and the Homeschooled Preschooler

June 9

There is a myth which is widely associated with the homeschooled student and that myth is that he is going to have difficulty developing normal social skills. It’s true that children learn social skills primarily in the school environment, but this doesn’t have to be the only place that kids can learn how to socialize with peers and non-relatives. What a parent needs to realize is that children DO need to learn social skills by interacting with others outside of the home but that there are many different ways that this can be done.

Choosing a Preschool Curriculum

June 6

Choosing a preschool curriculum can be an overwhelming endeavor. You want to make sure that you’re child is on track to learn what he or she needs to learn in order to be caught up with the other kids when kindergarten time comes around. However, you also want to choose a preschool curriculum which suits the individual needs of your child, including his or her need for a fun, challenging, interesting approach to education. After all, the preschool curriculum that you select is going to set the foundation for your child’s educational experience and your hope is that he or she will learn to love learning.

So, how do you choose a preschool curriculum? Here are three tips to get you started. (more...)
